'Sinner Deserves To Be No. 1' According To Federer Who 'Follows Him With Great Interest'

According to Roger Federer who follows him with great interest, Jannik Sinner deserved the number one spot.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion and the recent Australian Open winner never played against each other on the ATP Tour because things just never aligned properly. As Sinner was coming up, Federer was already dealing with injuries and didn't play that much.

It's unfortunate that it remains one of the moments that the Italian missed out on, and wanted to experience. He had dreamed about facing Federer on a tennis court but ultimately never got a chance to do so.

They practiced once together, in Halle, which was a few years ago, and Sinner recently talked about it. Federer also talked about the Italian during an interview with the Gazette recently, in which he admitted that Sinner deserved the number one ranking. He's a player Federer follows with 'great interest'.

"Sinner deserves the no. 1, he is playing great and he is a very good guy, very sweet. I follow him with great interest."

Federer on Sinner

Federer is generally a fan of this young generation and follows it closely. He admitted that he watches a lot of tennis when he can, and obviously, players like Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have been at the center of attention in recent months.

He'll get a chance to spend some time with Alcaraz later this year at the Laver Cup, where the Spaniard will play for the first time. The Italian isn't among confirmed players, but he could join the line-up. Asked how they compared to him and Rafael Nadal, Federer could see them form a similar rivalry.

"It seems to me that they respect each other a lot. They started off on the right foot, theirs promises to be a great challenge. It's nice to see them play."
