Sinner Confirms Favorite Status With Impressive First-Round Win At Roland Garros

Sinner Confirms Favorite Status With Impressive First-Round Win At Roland Garros

by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner returned to the tennis court in Paris and played a decent match to start his 2024 French Open campaign.

The last time fans saw the Italian play tennis was back in Madrid, where he suffered a hip injury, which forced him to abandon plans of playing out that event. It followed a leg injury sustained at the Monte-Carlo Masters, which reminded fans of the time when he used to struggle with a lot of minor injuries.

The hip issue wasn't that minor because he missed the Italian Open and almost missed Roland Garros as well. There were reports about doctors advising Sinner against playing, but he opted to do it anyway while acknowledging that he's not really 100%.

He didn't play at his peak in the first round, but he played well enough to overcome a player who doesn't really play on clay that much. Christopher Eubanks is a solid player but quite limited in clay, and we saw that in this match.

The second seed didn't have issues breaking his opponent in any of the sets, though Christopher Eubanks found better solutions as the match continued.

The American approached this match by trying to be as aggressive as possible, though it didn't quite work out because his serve was not the best in this match. Sinner stood back and caught many balls, which was the right approach, as in most rallies, he was overwhelmingly better.

Sinner's timely serving, especially when he faced break points, was important as well. That allowed him to avoid playing more than three sets, which can only benefit him considering that he's not really 100%.

It was just a very solid display from the Italian, who is one of the favourites to win the event, and he confirmed it by winning the match 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round.
