Jannik Sinner won his first match at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships relatively comfortably, even though he sometimes struggled with his movement.
The Italian player is no stranger to grass courts, but like any player, he tends to struggle sometimes with the slippery grass. That's how he explained some movement struggles he had during his match against Yannick Hanfmann at SW19.
Sinner is quite tall, so the grass isn't the best surface for him because it can be tricky for him to deal with the low bounce. His tennis overall was amazing because he bested Hanfmann in all but one set, which the German played spectacularly.
Overall, it was a very good performance, and he dismissed suggestions that there was something wrong with him physically, explaining that the slippery grass court contributed to his problems with movement.
"No, physically I feel good. It's first round, it's always a bit more slippery and I felt like when we were walking on court, it was a bit, not raining, but there was a little bit, so it was tough to get the court dry."
"I felt like from the moment when we closed the roof the court was much drier and it was a bit easier to move. But first rounds when the grass is new, it's obviously a bit slippery, and then everyone is a bit more struggling. So, I feel good physically."
It will be important for Sinner to stay physically healthy at SW19 because the last Grand Slam he played in Paris was marred by some physical struggles. It is normal at long events like that, especially towards the end, but fans will want to see Sinner fully operational in London because that will make him the most dangerous.
He's one of the top favorites among Carlos Alcaraz, and while he's not the best mover on the grass, movement is very important, and if he struggles with that, he won't go that far.
