Karen Khachanov was enraged by Ugo Humbert's actions and wild celebrations while he was carrying an injury during their Paris Masters semifinal.
Both men entered the semifinal in impressive form. Humbert's run to the semifinal included stunning Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16 with some inspired tennis, particularly in the deciding set of his 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win.
Khachanov's 2024 season was disrupted by injuries, but he dramatically returned to form during the indoor hardcourt season. The former Australian Open semifinalist won the Almaty Open by beating Alejandro Tabilo in the final.
That was followed by reaching the final of last week's Vienna Open. Jack Draper denied him a second title in as many weeks with an outstanding performance that took him to a career-high ranking.
Khachanov reached another semifinal at the Paris Masters and took on Humbert in front of a loud and passionate home crowd for a place in the final against Alexander Zverev.
After a tight and dramatic opening set, Khachanov took it 8-6 on a tiebreak. Humbert responded by winning the second set 6-4 to take the match into a decider.
Unfortunately, what promised to be a terrific final set was derailed by an injury to Khachanov. Despite finishing the match, he could not compete properly, and Humbert comfortably won it 6-3 to reach the final.
However, Khachanov's injury did not stop Humbert from celebrating wildly after winning several points and playing up to the crowd. That left his physically struggling opponent furious after the match.
Khachanov directed some pointed words at Humbert while shaking hands. The Frenchman seemed confused about what had annoyed the Russian before brushing it off and celebrating reaching the biggest final of his career.
In an interview after the match with ZiggoSport, Khachanov revealed he told Humbert to show more respect. He compared how Humbert acted with his more dignified response to Grigor Dimitrov's struggles in the quarterfinal.
"I told him at the net to show more respect. He has no idea how to behave. I’m always about fair play. I will congratulate him if he behaves like a normal person. That’s all I can say. You can be with the crowd. I have no problem with that."
"Did you see me celebrate yesterday? Grigor was exhausted. He wasn’t injured at the end, he told me. Did you see me jumping and screaming ‘Come on! Allez!’ After every point.. do you think it’s okay?"
"You can celebrate after with the crowd no problem. You can do whatever you want. But while you see injuries are part of the game… to do it while you see the guy is on the ground? Okay, see you next time."
Humbert's actions did seem slightly over-the-top throughout the third set. However, he may not have even noticed what his actions looked like while being zoned in during one of the biggest matches of his career.
Khachanov's saying, "See you next time," could start a heated rivalry between the pair unless their differences are resolved.
