Ben Shelton won his first clay-court title in the first week of April, but former world No. 1 Jimmy Connors believes his game is "more suited" for the lawns.
Shelton defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the Houston final less than two weeks ago to win his second ATP title. This was a particularly important achievement because it enabled the high-flying 21-year-old to rise above Taylor Fritz and become the USA's No. 1 ATP player.
The Atlanta native's decision to forego college studies in order to turn pro in late 2022 has been vindicated. Shelton has decided to pursue his education online while balancing the demanding life on tour.
Last year, he won his first ATP title in Tokyo, becoming just the fourth player on the men's Tour to emulate their father in winning a tour-level tournament. Among other firsts, Shelton also reached a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open - which fast-tracked his breakthrough into the Top 20.
Connors, a former World No. 1 and one of the greatest tennis players in history, reckons the youngster is "going to reach the pinnacle" in the coming months, highlighting the confidence he will draw from winning a title on his favorite surface.
Additionally, the 71-year-old explained in his eponymous Advantage Connors podcast that Shelton's game is tailor-made for the grass of Wimbledon. The lefty has only ever played five professional matches on the lawns, which all came last year.
"That’s real youth. He is big and strong, he has a big game. For him to win on clay, he’s got some confidence now. It’s going to be interesting to see the next couple of months, getting into the French [Open] and then through to Wimbledon. I would think his game is more suited for the Wimbledon conditions."
