Lorenzo Musetti’s coach slammed
Holger Rune for taking a medical timeout at the 2023 Cinch Championships.
It was an interesting match between the players at the Cinch Championships, as a semi-final appearance was at stake. Rune has never won a match on grass before the ATP event in London, and he was playing rather well. Not early in the match, though, as Musetti found an early 4-1 lead.
Rune later took a medical timeout due to a wrist problem,
something that plagued him earlier this year. It broke the Italian's momentum as Rune stormed back to win the set 6-4, winning five games in a row.
The second set featured
more drama as Musetti hit Rune with an overhead. That, however, didn't change much as
Rune won the match in two sets to advance to a maiden semi-final on grass. Musett's coach, Simone Tartarini, however, was not happy about the timing of the Dane's medical timeout.
"Rune is the classic "Mr. Cretinetti" (silly) and he clearly called the MTO on purpose to make Lorenzo lose the concentration."
It's not the first time Rune has been accused of taking a tactical medical timeout. Casper Ruud said earlier this year
that a tactical medical timeout helped Rune to turn things around in their match at the Italian Open in Rome.
Rune was questioned about his medical timeout after the match against Musetti, but he completely dismissed it. However, Tartarini is certain of the nature of the medical timeout, which gave him a better idea of what 'type of player' Rune is.
"(Musetti) was very naive. He has to learn to move on in those moments. I have to repeat myself; he is a Mr. Cretinetti and very arrogant. Disappointed. Because we've known him for some time and Musetti often trained with him, having faced a parallel junior career. Now we understand what type he is."
