Rune Issues Clear Response After 'Crying' Accusations Following Monte Carlo Disappointment

Holger Rune's X account is one of the most authentic in the sport, and he showed this again in a response he gave to a fan.

The Dane has often created headlines with his actions on-court, with some of this possibly overstepping the line in the past. However, the 20-year-old was treated quite harshly in his Monte-Carlo Masters quarterfinal loss to Jannik Sinner.

After being booed by the crowd after receiving a time violation, Rune made an innocent and not offensive gesture, telling the crowd to be quiet. But the umpire then gave him another violation for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The umpire also made a mistake with a line call in the second-set tie-break, although Rune still went on to win that set. After the match, Rune slammed the ATP for those mistakes and also for the lack of recovery time he had after playing consecutive long matches, spending almost five hours on the court the previous day.

Although many feel Rune had very legitimate grievances, a tennis fan online replied to an X post by Rune, accusing him of 'crying.' Rune did not accept this and gave a very clear response to the fan.

"Hi. If I want to cry, I cry. If I want to scream, I scream. That’s me. And by the way, I never cry. This post was mainly mentioning that it’s probably the shortest tournament I had in a long time in Europe and still 3 matches. Very efficient."

Although Rune sometimes divides opinion, it is obvious that he will always be himself. This is certainly admirable, with fans always getting a player who is acting naturally whenever they are watching Rune.

His interactions with fans on social media are always entertaining, and this is another example. Rune does not take criticism that he thinks lying down is unfair and that it is likely to continue in the future.
