Rune Eases Past Musetti To Start Indian Wells Campaign With Win

Holger Rune has got his groove back as the Danish superstar outplayed Lorenzo Musetti in Indian Wells.

This was a hugely problematic matchup for Musetti to begin with, so it's not that surprising that this match was a rather easy win for Rune. It mostly comes down to Rune really having better weapons. It comes down to weapons on a court like this.

The Dane simply has more weapons and bigger weapons which makes it easier for him to actually take control of the match. Musetti struggled with that against Denis Shapovalov in the previous round but was able to wiggle himself out of it.

The Danish superstar is a far better player than Shapovalov, and he didn't let go easily. Rune took a break early on in the opening set, and it set the tone for the rest of the match. From there, he kept applying the pressure until he finally broke once more to finish off the first set 6-2.

The second set almost started with an early break as well. Rune was up 40-0 on Musetti's serve in the second game of the second set, but the Italian miraculously found a way out of that. Musetti then had break points of his own but also failed to use them, which was a rather big moment for the match.

If Musetti had found a way to break there, who knows what might have happened in the coming games? After that, both players settled in pretty nicely, as neither was able to create any chances. The set ended up in a tiebreak, which is interesting because it didn't look like it would go that way.

Despite Musetti having a 5-4 lead in the tiebreak, Rune was able to finish off the match with an express 3-0 run to keep it in two, winning 6-2, 7-6(5).
