Holger Rune started off his
Roland Garros campaign on a high note, but the match left fans a bit worried about his knee.
Rune arrived in Paris after a really superb run in Rome, where he defeated Novak Djokovic among other things, en route to the final,
where Daniil Medvedev proved better.
That run made him one of the players who could potentially win this year's French Open, even though many have a few players ahead of him in that regard.
Rune
defeated Christopher Eubanks in four sets in his opening match to start a possible title journey. It wasn't a perfect match by any means because he dropped a set, but more importantly, he also seemed to have hit his knee, which left him in pain for a while. Fans became worried, but he cleared the air after the match, explaining that there was no injury.
"Yeah, I feel good now. I just hit return and I slipped a little bit and I slammed my left knee in the ground. It was a bit painful when it happened, but now it's okay. It was nothing dangerous. Then I would have called the trainer. It was not painful. It was just a hit. So all good."
Rune is expected to raise his level as the event moves on, but the worry about his body is a genuine one. He's had a few moments this year where he seemed to have injured himself, only to brush those concerns aside.
He's young, so recovery is rather quick, but like many other young players, he doesn't have to strongest of bodies yet. Still, he's better than the average player, and much of that is due to his hard work with his physical trainer.
"Yeah, it's great. Me and Lapo have been working together for three, four years now at the academy. He's a great fitness coach. He's keeping me in shape, improving me every day."
"He's really experienced and he's very dedicated in his work, which I really admire. I like to work with dedicated people. He's a great fitness coach, and I'm happy that he's here with me."
