Andrey Rublev was recently disqualified from his match at the 2024 Dubai Championships, and according to Andy Roddick, he gave the supervisor a reason to do that.
Rublev was involved in a pretty competitive and fiery match against Alexander Bublik. Tensions boiled over in one moment as the Russian unleashed on a line umpire who didn't react to a ball the Russian thought was out.
He went over to the line umpire, screaming at him and screaming in their face, ultimately costing him the match. He was defaulted from the match after the chair umpire was informed of what was said.
Rublev disputed the claim but ultimately had to comply with the ruling. In his most recent episode of Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the former world number one on the ATP Tour addressed the situation.
"Rublev can't be that upset. Whether he deserved it or he didn't, he put himself in position for someone to be able to make a judgment call. He has to now give up his prize money for the week, his ATP ranking points for the week, drops him out of the Top 5 in the world."
Roddick isn't a fan of the ATP rule regarding defaults, which means that a player loses all points and money earned that week. At the time when he recored the podcast, Roddick wasn't aware that the ATP would reinstate both the money and the points for Rublev after he launched an appeal to the rulling.
The American will be glad about it because he's really not a fan of that.
"I don't know what his meltdown on Friday has to do with his first, second, and third-round victories. Rublev can't be that upset. Whether he deserved it or he didn't, he put himself in position for someone to be able to make a judgment call."
"He will have some of the blame because he went too far, but taking the money for the week, taking away the points because of a judgment call of some guy in a chair, that doesn’t make sense to me."
