Roger Federer will play competitive tennis in 2022, with the Swiss Maestro slated to play at the Swiss Indoors in Basel in October.
Federer has not played since Wimbledon last year, opting to undergo a third knee surgery after the event after not being content with its state. The Swiss Ace initially returned to Geneva on clay, playing through Roland Garros, but experienced issues at all of those events.
He was recommended to undergo another surgery, taking the proper time to return this time around, and it seems like it will happen in 2022. A couple of months ago, his coach Ivan Ljubicic confirmed that Federer wouldn't play at Wimbledon, but he was targetting the second part of the season.
He signed up to play at the Laver Cup in September, and now he will also play at the ATP 500 tournament in Basel at the end of October. It's one of the tournaments where Federer enjoyed a lot of success, winning it ten times in his career.
Moreover, he will technically be a defending champion during the 2022 edition of the tournament, which will be held between October 24th and 30th, because the tournament has not been held in 2020 and 2021.
That means, that Federer's triumph in 2019, which was the last of his three consecutive titles in Basel, is the last time someone has lifted a trophy on the tennis court in the Swiss city.
The news was confirmed by a Swiss writer, René Stauffer, who announced on his Twitter profile that the Swiss player would return to the city where he has won ten titles in the past.
"Breaking news: Roger Federer will return to the Swiss Indoors in Basel end of October. His first confirmed start on the ATP-Tour after the Laver Cup in September. Hasn’t played since Wimbledon 2021 (QF ag Hurkacz). Won 10 Titles in his hometown, including the last of his 103."
