'People Still Expect Hatred Between Us': Tsitsipas On Relationship With Rival Medvedev

by Nurein Ahmed

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev never saw eye to eye, but they have seemingly ended their squabble judging by recent pictures emanating from Indian wells.

Tsitsipas and Medvedev were bitter rivals in the past and shared some tense and heated moments on the court. The most glaring episode of their tumultuous relationship was summed up during a match at the Miami Open in 2018 when Medvedev verbally confronted the Greek at the end of the match.

A few seasons ago, the Russian accused Tsitsipas of receiving coaching instructions from his father, Apostolos, during their meeting at the Australian Open before he took it all back during the post-match press conference, stating that he regretted it and that he was "out of his mind."

But both men have buried the hatchet as far as their frosty relationship is concerned. While they remain rivals, they have instituted a more professional approach to their association, at least by Tsitsipas' admission.

The two-time Grand Slam finalist told the Tennis Channel news desk that there are no bones to pick from their duels. The pair practiced together before the Indian Wells tournament began and shared a cordial moment by shaking it all off, much to the surprise of some tennis critics.

"It's a long history, I mean what whatever happened uh how many years ago was that like 10 years ago (laughing). I guess yeah it was a long time ago. I guess people still expect some sort of controversy or uh hatred between us two but uh this has been long gone uh and not something that I focus too much on these days actually."

Tsitsipas kicked off his 2024 Indian Wells campaign with a routine 6-3, 6-2 win over Lucas Pouille and will meet World No. 18 Frances Tiafoe in the third round. Medvedev, meanwhile, will play his second-round match on Saturday night against Roberto Carballes Baena.
