Patrick Mouratoglou has highlighted Carlos Alcaraz's ability to perform at the elite level on all surfaces and not just clay.

In a stellar breakthrough season in 2022, Alcaraz regularly demonstrated his top-level ability on clay surfaces. The Spanish player defeated Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on clay in Madrid last year and he has also won four of his eight career titles on the surface.

As a result, competitors and pundits are aware of the 19-year-old's ability to perform well on clay in particular. But Mouratoglou feels Alcaraz should not be categorised as just a good clay player because he is well-suited to other surfaces too.

"I think Carlos Alcaraz is an all-court player, I don't think he is a clay-court player. Rafa is more of a clay court player. He's an all-court player, but he has learned to be good on other surfaces, but originally, he was really a clay court player, which is not the case for Carlos."

Despite his admission of Alcaraz being a strong all-rounder, Mouratoglou said the Spanish star still has some edge on clay compared to his competitors. The French coach also feels that many of Alcaraz's physical and technical attributes help him to stand out on clay when compared to other players on the surface.

"I think he's an all-court player from the start. He's good on hard as on clay, maybe I would give him a little more advantage on clay than hard because he has some weapons that are deadly on clay."
"The drop shot, and he's a master in drop shots. His kick serve which is one of the best, if not the best, on tour. And his forehand. And of course, he's an incredible mover. When you put all of this together, I think it gives him even an extra edge on clay compared to hard court."
