Nick Kyrgios announced that he won't be competing at the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) in Los Angeles.
Earlier in the season, Kyrgios was forced to miss the Australian Open and Roland Garros because of a knee injury. He later injured his foot when a robber attempted to steal his mother's car.
Now, the Australian player wanted to show his tennis craft in Los Angeles this summer, but an injury prevented him from competing in the popular exhibition tournament organized by famous coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
Only three days before the event's start, the 28-year-old player announced that a wrist injury won't allow him to compete at the tournament. It's the same injury that prevented him from competing at Wimbledon this year.
Kyrgios announced his withdrawal from the UTS in Los Angeles via social media, explaining that since he's still recovering, he wouldn't be able to compete at the tournament.
However, he gave fans, who have already bought the tickets, also a bit of hope of seeing him. The Australian player revealed that he will still be present at the event.
"I just want to let you know that I am still recovering and getting my wrist right to be back on the court soon. Don’t worry though! I will still be coming to LA and the UTS event. Maybe I’ll coach… any suggestions?"
Kyrgios hinted at possibly coaching one of the players in Los Angeles. While he obviously won't become a coach of neither of the players, he could offer some friendly advice to some of the competitors at UTS.
Previously, Kyrgios hinted that he would be interested in mentoring Holger Rune, so it's clear that maybe after his tennis career, he might take on some coaching assignments, with the first one happening already in Los Angeles.
