Nick Kyrgios will continue his 2022 season at the Cincinnati Masters, thanks to a wild card entry he received for the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Kyrgios has been showing some tremendous tennis this year, with notable performances starting as early as in Australia and continuing across several months. He won his maiden Grand Slam trophy in Melbourne with Thanasi Kokkinakis in the doubles.

Then he continued playing well in the following weeks, making solid runs at a few events, including the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open, where he smashed Andrey Rublev, for example, before losing to Jannik Sinner.

The Australian didn’t play much during the clay season but made a really good run on grass at Wimbledon, making the final, in which he took on Novak Djokovic. Despite winning the opening set, Kyrgios didn’t keep the lead and missed out on winning his maiden Grand Slam trophy.

The hope for the Australian is to continue that momentum during the North American hard court season, and one of those stops he’ll visit is the Cincinnati Open. It’s an interesting event with unique conditions, which are generally more on the faster side.

His love for fast courts is well-documented, so he will likely enjoy his time there. He did in the past, as he made the final in 2017 when he lost to Grigor Dimitrov.

One minor annoyance for Kyrgios was missing out on the Wimbledon points because the event was stripped of it this year due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players.

Missing out on those points meant that his ranking didn’t increase, so he needed a wild card entry for the Cincinnati Masters, but he got it, so he will be part of that event.

Some have spoken of him as a dark horse for the US Open, and the more practice time in the United States he will get before that, the more likely that is to happen.
