Nick Kyrgios might be enjoying one of the best tournaments of his career at the 2022 US Open, but he won't enjoy all of his prize money.
Kyrgios has already received three fines in New York this year, so the total amount of the fines he has to pay climbed over $15,000. He's been doing very well at Flushing Meadows, but with every match, the total he has to pay in fines increases along with his prize money.
The 27-year-old Australian is attempting to reach back-to-back Grand Slam finals, and he's only two matches away from doing that. In the quarter-finals, he will take on Karen Khachanov, one day after he crashed out from doubles with his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis.
For reaching the quarter-finals in singles, Kyrgios earned $445,000 and for the third round in doubles, he earned $28,200. However, during the seven matches he played in singles and doubles combined, he also received three fines.
One of the fines came in his second-round match against Benjamin Bonzi. The Australian won that match in four sets, 7-6(3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, but he complained about the marijuana smell during the match and also spat on the court.
As a result, he received the biggest fine of this tournament so far - $7,500. Kyrgios then received one more fine in one of the doubles matches, which equaled $4,000.
He then received another $4,000 fine during his fourth-round match against the ATP World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. The Australian upset the Russian player for the second time this season, but he didn't avoid being frustrated.
At one point, Kyrgios was frustrated with his serve. He shouted towards his box, as he didn't know how to serve efficiently, asking where to serve.
"Tell me where to f***ing serve.“F***ing three times. Say something. F***ing hell."
With the latest fine, Kyrgios' fines climbed already to $15,500. For now, it's only a small portion of $473,200 he earned in New York, but he will want to avoid accumulating any more fines.
