Nick Kyrgios won’t be playing at this year’s Laver Cup, as he confirmed that he will head back home to spend time with family and his girlfriend.
Kyrgios has attended the Laver Cup in the past, as he found enjoyment in the way the competition is structured. Players are not expected to take the event as seriously as other ATP events, as it’s more of an exhibition.
It’s still competitive, but it’s more on the looser side of tennis, as it’s a team event with no points to win, and even though there is money to win, players are compensated for attending anyway.
It’s the type of event that just suits Kyrgios and the way he approaches tennis in general. He’s been more serious with it this year, resulting in the best year he’s had in a very long time.
Even so, he won’t be taking part in the Laver Cup in 2022, which might surprise a few of his fans because he was generally expected to take part. He took part in the past and seemed to have enjoyed it, but this time around, he has other plans.
The plans are simple. After spending weeks and months away from his family, the Australian will go back home to spend some time there. It’s not a huge surprise because he’s always been adamant that he doesn’t really like the way the tennis calendar is set up at the moment.
The season is too long. He has, as an issue, spent too much time away from home, so heading back home is an obvious choice for him, especially now that he’s actually had some success, so there isn’t really much pressure for him to compete.
"No Laver Cup for me this year!!! Just letting you all know. Gotta have that home time with my family and beautiful girlfriend."
Jack Sock, who currently plays doubles alongside the Australian in Washington, was the latest addition to the team of John McEnroe.
