Two-time Munich Open champion Alexander Zverev played one of the worst matches in recent seasons when he lost in the opening match of the 2022 Munich Open to Holger Rune.
After losing in his first match at the 2022 Munich Open, Alexander Zverev reportedly broke into tears. With his Madrid Open title defense just days away, the world no. 3 was upset 6-3 6-2 by 18-year-old Holger Rune in what he described as his "worst game in years."
It was a very difficult loss for the German, who certainly wanted to impress in front of the home crowd, but that did not happen, and he was aware of it. After the match, Zverev addressed his performance, admitting that he was nervous because of not playing in his home country for a long time.
He apologized not just to the spectators, but also to the tournament organizers, calling the match his "worst" in last seven years.
“I was incredibly nervous today before the match. It was my first time in Germany in front of a crowd for years. I can hardly speak now either. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for the spectators, I'm sorry for the tournament. It was my worst match in the last five, six, seven years."
Analyzing his performance further, Zverev said that he was "playing without a forehand," which is a crucial shot in his game, especially in combination with a powerful serve, with which he tends to struggle every now and then.
However, the German reminded that he doesn't want to find excuses. According to him "there are no excuses" and that's how he assessed his performance.
"I played without a forehand today. A performance like today's isn't enough even in a tournament in the 250 category. There are no excuses. Anyone who finds excuses today is not the smartest person."
