Monfils Ruled Out of Wimbledon as His Injury Woes Continue

Gael Monfils has officially withdrawn from the 2023 Wimbledon as the French player continues to struggle with a wrist injury.

Monfils sustained his injury during the 2023 Roland Garros and was forced to withdraw in the second round against Holger Rune. It was a major setback for the 36-year-old Frenchman, who had previously progressed through the first round after an emotional comeback victory and his first match since 2022 on the ATP Tour.

However, Monfils was hopeful of making a recovery in time to feature in his second Grand Slam of the season at Wimbledon in early July. But Monfils will once again miss out on another Grand Slam this season.

It will be the second consecutive year that Monfils has missed out on Wimbledon after the Frenchman was omitted from the 2022 edition. Also, the 36-year-old's lack of playing time at the ATP level due to injury in recent months has seen the former world number six fall down to 314th in the official ATP Rankings.

Monfils made his first-ever appearance at Wimbledon in 2005 when he reached the third round in an impressive maiden performance. Then, the French player produced his best-ever Wimbledon run in 2018 when he reached the fourth round of the Grand Slam before he was defeated by eventual finalist Kevin Anderson, who then lost to now-23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

With yet another big setback coming for Monfils ahead of the third Grand Slam of the season, it remains to be seen when he will return to the court in 2023. The veteran player is likely to target the US Open later in the season and he could opt to compete at more Challenger-level events for the remainder of the summer and into the autumn in a bid to build fitness and form ahead of the final major.
