Novak Djokovic didn’t have the best start to the 2022 season, but he got back on track by lifting his 21st Grand Slam trophy at Wimbledon.
Djokovic’s 2022 season started off with a rather troubling sequence at the Australian Open as he was booted from the country by the immigration minister.
While the story largely focused on his unvaccinated status, the Serbian was actually deemed a safety concern, which is the official reason why he was deported from the country.
It was a tough moment for him, especially since he watched his rival Rafael Nadal go on to lift the trophy. He then missed the Sunshine Double due to his unvaccinated status, as he couldn’t enter the United States, and it’s just been far from what he and many of his fans hoped for.
Things finally clicked for him at Wimbledon, where he was able to put together a really good run and win the trophy. It came after a four-set win against Nick Kyrgios, and while some dismissed that win because of who he played, it was a hugely impressive victory.
Djokovic was still able to win, and that showed his coach, Goran Ivanisevic, who talked to Nova TV, that he still has the fire and passion for the sport. The Croatian is firmly backing his player for more success in the future, even with these troubling circumstances.
"It is an honor and a pleasure. A man who has conquered everything and is still hungry and eager for success. He has had a difficult, unfair year, many bad things happened to him. He deserved that Wimbledon, in the final there were two of the world's best tennis players on grass, he and Kyrgios."
It’s very unlikely that Djokovic will be able to compete at the US Open in the coming months, even though both he and Ivanisevic hope it will happen.
