This season's Madrid Open will feature a new trophy for the winner of the 1000-level tournament.

The event organisers chose a new approach in which each year will feature its own unique trophy. This season’s version of the trophy has been named Agón, which will be awarded to the winner of the ATP singles event.

In a recent interview with the Madrid Open organisers, the sculptor of this year's trophy - David Rodriguez shone some light on how he came up with the design and who he hopes may lift the trophy this year, after Carlos Alcaraz triumphed last year.

On a formal level, I started with the theme of the oval because I think that’s the tool of a tennis player. It’s the only tool they have to come through all the battles, the defences and the attacks. And it’s like an extension of the tennis player’s body. In my plastic work, I developed the sculpture with two actions: one action is linear, which is folding, as you can see in last year’s trophy, and the other is with the cup, the curve of the plane.

Rodriguez also spoke of how he has mixed emotions when he sees players biting the trophy after winning the title - something Nadal was the trend-setter for when he started the tradition back in 2005.

On the one hand, as a spectator, I love it, because it’s like having a baby and that baby being successful. It was also hard for me. Above all, I found it hard because of the champagne and liquids they pour on it, because they’re not good for conserving objects. But the stage is so beautiful and spectacular that you also forget about all that and enjoy it as just another spectator.

Players and fans alike will get to see the new edition of this trophy on finals day in over a week's time as the winner is awarded the Agón.
