After winning nine matches in a row, Nick Kyrgios' winning streak came to an end because the Australian was beaten by his Polish colleague Hubert Hurkacz at the 2022 Canadian Open.
This season has been superb for Kyrgios, as he played some really spectacular tennis at times. He made his maiden Grand Slam final this year at Wimbledon, where Novak Djokovic beat him.
He also won a trophy this year, which happened recently at the Citi Open in Washington, where he won six matches to win the ATP 500 event. The next event he played was the Canadian Open, where he won three more matches.
He first bested Sebastian Baez in two sets, after which he bested Daniil Medvedev in three sets, and then he also beat compatriot Alex de Minaur in two sets to find himself in the quarter-final.
There, he ran into a very inspired Hubert Hurkacz, who is generally a very tough player to play. Hurkacz has a massive serve and is consistent from the baseline, playing a style of play that is generally not that risky.
He goes for safe shots, and he’s very good at hitting them. Even so, Kyrgios was very competitive in the match. Hurkacz won the first set in a tie-break, with Kyrgios winning the second set in a tie-break, also thanks to an incredible lucky net cord double bounce.
The final set wasn’t very close, though, as Kyrgios lost it 1-6. Through much of the match, Kyrgios battled some sort of physical problem, which became evident in the final set, in which he was outplayed without any resistance.
It was an unfortunate way to end a nine-match winning streak, but fans are hoping that it’s not very serious. The Cincinnati Masters is coming up, and then the US Open, and the last thing he needs right now is an injury.
