Nick Kyrgios has been incredibly busy fulfilling television obligations of different kinds in the past month and recently spoke to the Athletic in a tell-all interview.
The much-maligned tennis star opened up about the "weird" expectations Australians place on their athletes. He has admitted he doesn't want to fall into this trap by pursuing a regular commentary gig while he is still an active tennis player.
The 28-year-old worked as an analyst at this year's ATP Finals for Tennis Channel, which was telecasted in the United States. He received enormous praise for his insightful analysis and opinions from fans and the broadcaster's Chief Executive, who labeled him a "total pro."
"Total pro. On time. Actually, early. Well dressed. Did his homework, and gave insights that you can only get from a player at that level who knew the competition in a way few others do."
Kyrgios is currently out of action due to knee and wrist injuries. He played just one match in the entire 2023 season and is expected to miss the first stretch of next season after undergoing a "minor procedure" on his wrist a few months ago.
Outspoken and sometimes controversial with perceiving things, Kyrgios has always come about as altruistic in his claims according to many tennis fans. Back home, Kyrgios has always garnered criticism and acclaim in pretty much equal order.
As such, he prefers America over Australia, not only because of a larger and fairer fanbase but also because natives in his country do not let him fire at two birds with one stone when it comes to juggling a different hustle outside tennis.
"I feel more respected here (U.S.). Australians don’t expect athletes to do anything else but play their sport, which is really weird. I definitely see myself coming back at some stage and playing at a high level again. But because of how intense last year was for me, this was a year to just balance it out."
