Juan Martin Del Potro hoped to play at the 2023 US Open to say goodbye one final time, but it won't be happening.

Del Potro had already retired from the sport doing it back home in Argentina at the Buenos Aires Open. Still, the Argentinian had the wish to play one final time at the US Open in order to properly say goodbye to the sport at the place where he had his best moment.

In 2009, a young Juan Martin Del Potro made a sensational effort to defeat Roger Federer in the US Open final. The triumph would remain his only Grand Slam trophy, which seemed unthinkable then. Many assumed that Del Potro would win multiple Grand Slams because his talent was that big.

Unfortunately, multiple injuries stopped him from more success on the ATP Tour. The Argentinian had a couple of strong runs, but he was never far away from a serious injury, and it's why he's not playing anymore. He's spoken more than once about his sadness about it, but that's life.

Fans held out hope that he would be in New York but it won't be happening as he confirmed it on social media. He posted an update written in Spanish, and we bring you the translated version below.

As you know, my desire to return to such a special court like the one at the US Open had me very excited. I pursued every possible means in order to get there, but my body is not 100 percent with me to let me feel comfortable and content to share in such a unique moment one more time with you all.
...The pain I feel won’t let me focus on a return yet. I will keep looking for better alternatives in order to regain my quality of life.”  “I thank you all for your company, your understanding and for all the messages of support you’re sending me. Sending you all a big hug. I hope to see you soon.
