Jannik Sinner vs Daniil Medvedev: 2024 US Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev have played some spectacular matches in the past, and they will meet once again in the quarter-finals of the 2024 US Open.

The two are widely regarded as the top favorites to win the US Open, not only because they are highly ranked but also because they’ve been playing the best tennis. Sinner is the world number one and has arguably played the best tennis overall at the US Open so far, but Medvedev is not far behind.

The Russian has been impressive and has a habit of beating the Italian, as he did earlier this year at Wimbledon. It’s generally an exciting matchup that is often battled from the baseline.

Both enjoy standing back on the baseline and trading blows, which makes this a matchup that can be very volatile. The matchup can turn out very differently depending on who has the better day and is a bit sharper.

The Italian has generally been really good against Medvedev, but the Russian's Wimbledon win should give Medvedev confidence heading into this match. Sinner did deal with some physical problems in that match, which impacted him, and ahead of this match, he's aware of his opponent's qualities.

"Tough match. It’s gonna be a lot of rallies. Hopefully, I’ll be ready physically. It’s gonna be a physical and mental match. I won in Australia. He won in Wimbledon... both in 5 sets. Hopefully, it will be a good match. We’ll try to do our best on the court. Hopefully, you guys enjoy it, and we’ll see how it goes."

Head-to-head:

Sinner and Medvedev have played each other many times, with a total of 12 ATP Tour-level matches so far. All of those matches have been competitive, dating back to 2020.

Medvedev won the first one and the most recent one at Wimbledon. They’ve never played at the US Open before, but they met in Miami earlier this year, where Sinner won easily.

In fact, Sinner has won all five of their last matches on hard courts and five of their last six matches overall. Medvedev's win at Wimbledon was a strong one, but Sinner admitted that he didn’t feel his best in that match, which likely affected his level.

Overall, it’s a matchup that has lately favored the current World No. 1 player because he is one of the few players who can hit through Medvedev.

Both have played well at the US Open so far, so neither is ahead when it comes to form. As always, it will come down to which player performs better on the day, and lately, that’s mostly been Sinner.

Prediction:

Medvedev will hope that Sinner has a bad day, similar to how he did against Tommy Paul. Sinner wasn’t that spectacular in that match, and if he plays at that level again, he will certainly be in some trouble against Medvedev.

Serving well will also be very crucial for the Russian, as it can limit the Italian. Another key factor is Medvedev's focus. Sometimes, he can be a bit loose with his play, but overall, he’s been very good at maintaining focus when facing the best in the world.

Even with all of that, sometimes it’s just not enough, as it wasn’t earlier this year in Melbourne.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
