'I'm Just A Skilled Guy': Tiafoe On Doing Well On Grass Compared To Rest

by Alfredo Bassanelli

Frances Tiafoe is one confident player and he demonstrated it a couple of times this year both on and off the court.

Frances Tiafoe is enjoying life on the ATP Tour this year with some really solid results overall. A trophy in Houston, another one recently in Stuttgart and his first time being part of the top 10. He's also the first African-American to do that in 14 years. It's looked good for the American and he's not stopping anytime soon.

Days after his Stuttgart triumph, Tiafoe stepped on the Cinch Championship courts and outplayed Botic van de Zandschulp in two sets demonstrating once again his comfort on grass. He was asked about it following the match and the lighthearted Tiafoe took the opportunity to joke a bit.

I'm just a skilled guy, man. I don't know what to tell you (smiling).

He didn't lie though as the American is one of the few players that doesn't mind playing cat and mouse on a tennis court. He actually prefers it and there is a lot of that on the grass courts. Playing on grass simply feels natural to Tiafoe who admitted in a more serious manner that he never minded playing on grass because he just has good hands and instincts.

No, I mean, I have always really liked playing on grass. I've got good hands, good instincts. I can move quite well on it, am very quick, very fast. So, yeah, I have a really flat backhand which makes it uncomfortable for guys. Yeah, I feel like I always just got on to it really well. It helps me play the right way.

Tiafoe will put his 5-match winning streak on the line against fellow compatriot Sebastian Korda who made a great start at the Queen's Club as well. Tiafoe leads the H2H 3-1 against the fellow American though he lost the most recent one.
