Carlos Alcaraz was praised by John McEnroe after the Spaniard reached the US Open semi-final on Thursday, but it wasn't for his tennis ability.
Alcaraz cruised into the final four at the US Open after he defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets during the quarter-final clash. Next up, the world ATP number one will face either Danill Medvedev in the last four as he aims for a second consecutive US Open final after winning the competition in 2022.
During his pre-match interview, Alcaraz was spotted wearing a pair of Nike Mac Attack sneakers, which were originally designed in 1984 for the former ATP great. McEnroe also noticed Alcaraz's shoe choice for the post-match interview and the former American player turned pundit had a link to the Spanish player via his brother, who was conducting the interview with the world number one.
"Patrick, make sure you tell Carlos I love the sneakers,
"Carlos, my brother wants to tell you he loves your sneakers,"
However, the sneakers worn by Alcaraz at the 2023 US Open were not the original version of the Mac Attacks from the 1980s. Earlier this year, Nike enlisted several high-profile US stars, including NBA player PJ Tucker and rapper Travis Scott, to market the re-launch of the infamous Mac Attack sneakers.
The advertising clearly reached Alcaraz, who is known for taking pride in his sneaker selection off-court. In response to McEnroe's initial question, the 20-year-old shared his verdict on the 2023 edition of the Mac Attacks.
"Thank you, it’s a good one, right?”
