After regaining the top spot in the ATP rankings, Daniil Medvedev has come out to explain why he thinks he thoroughly deserves the feat.
Interestingly, and what has certainly caught the eye of tennis fans, is that these comments come after the Russian, in fact, reclaimed the top spot after Novak Djokovic's loss.
The Serbian failed to defend his 2000 points from Roland Garros last year, meaning the Russian has taken back the number one place in the ATP rankings for now.
Despite returning to the top thanks to someone else's misfortune, the Russian is adamant that he deserves to reclaim the number one spot in the world.
“I am happy to be right at the top again, and have really earned it, too. The world rankings covers 52 weeks and not only one, otherwise we would have a new number one all the time."
What is more, it is expected for Medvedev to keep a hold on the top spot for a while yet to come. Djokovic is set to drop 2,000 points from his Wimbledon triumph, and with Alexander Zverev out for the foreseeable with his ankle injury, the Russian could be coming into a golden patch at the summit of men's tennis.
Whilst it is true that the grass season will be cut short for Medvedev due to the fact he will not be at Wimbledon, he is indeed gradually getting more comfortable on the surface, meaning picking up and gaining points in future grass tournaments.
"I am getting stronger on grass and I’m very happy about that because grass used to be my favourite surface. I can bring my game better to the fore. I like the lawn. I have a lot of potential there and I am continuously improving.”
All that remains to be seen now is how long the Russian can maintain his stay at the top and whether, as he explained, the ranking system really does favor a 52-week period instead of per tournament.
