Dominic Thiem won his first ATP match of the 2023 season after the Austrian beat Alex Molcan in three sets at the Argentina Open.

The win was a big step for Thiem who has had an inconsistent start in 2023. First, the Austrian was knocked out of the ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide in the first round before he fell at the first attempt at the Australian Open to Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

Thiem also lost his Davis Cup qualification match against Croatian Borna Coric in February. However, the 29-year-old is focussing on the future rather than looking back after his first win of the season.

“I try to focus on the present moment, which is the most important. And, obviously, I had great moments in my career to be proud of, but now, in this moment, I am in 2023, and I want to get the best out of it.”

Thiem on his first win of 2023

Previously, Thiem won the tournament in 2016 and 2018. The Austrian believed previous success was essential to his most recent victory in Buenos Aires.

“I felt well here from the first moment I played here in 2016. I think that conditions here – the balls and the clay court and the stadium – it fits well to my game.”

Since a wrist injury in 2021, Thiem has struggled to find the same levels that helped him to reach third in the ATP rankings. However, the 29-year-old is remaining positive after his win against Alex Molcan.

"Obviously, when I won two titles here, the confidence is automatically a bit higher. But still, I came in here with no match wins this season against a very good opponent, so it’s a good win for me and I am happy.”
