Ugo Humbert bested Grigor Dimitrov in the 2024 Marseille Open final to win his fifth career trophy.
Before playing the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Marseille, the Frenchman was perfect in Tour-level finals, winning all four that he played. He wanted to improve that record on the home soil, while Dimitrov wanted to be the disruptor, as he was in great form.
Both players started the match hot on their serves, barely losing any points. It took until the eighth game of the first set, when one of the players lost more than one point on their serve, but it was only two points that the Bulgarian lost in a hold to 30.
However, a couple of games later, Dimitrov, got into 40-30 situation again, but this time around, he couldn't convert his game point, or the following two, and Humbert used his second break point of the game, and the set, to win the opener 6-4.
Fans got to see a few more break points in the second set. First, Dimitrov didn't use two chances in the opening game, and not long after that, Humbert broke the Bulgarian's serve again to make it 2-0 in the second set.
The French player then faced a 0-30 deficit on his serve, but from there, he won 14 consecutive points on his serve, something he really needed as he was a break up, and thanks to that, he was also able to win the second set and the match.
Humbert won the final 6-4, 6-3 to claim his fifth career title, staying perfect in all five Tour-level finals he played. After the match, he was asked about his perfect record, and the Frenchman attributed it to his mentality.
"I’m very strong mentally in finals. It was a great match against Grigor, he’s one of the best players at the moment, so it was not easy. It’s so nice to win at home again. It’s here where everything began, because I reached my first semi-final on Tour [here]. It’s really nice to win Marseille, it’s a good feeling."
