Holger Rune Parts Ways With Coach Patrick Mouratoglou Once Again

by Zachary Wimer

Holger Rune and Patrick Mouratoglou have parted ways once more, as they again concluded that it would be best to split.

The young Dane has known the experienced French coach for years. He was one of the youngsters who came through his Mouratoglou Tennis Academy, much like the Fruhvirtova sisters, Coco Gauff, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

That familiarity proved crucial when Rune hired Mouratoglou for the first time. It came at a time when he needed to make a step forward, and he certainly had it under the Frenchman, winning his maiden ATP Masters 1000 tournament with Mouratoglou at the helm.

After a while together, Rune and Mouratoglou parted ways because things seemingly didn't work out that well. There was some back-and-forth through the media, but eventually, they started working again after Rune parted ways with Boris Becker.

He then rehired Mouratoglou again, which was a surprising move, considering that there were obviously some bad feelings when they parted ways the last time. Both downplayed that and wanted to turn a new page.

They were going strong for a while, but it seemed like the differences were still present, as they had now parted once more. Both of them released statements about the news at the same time, which at least shows some coordination.

In fact, Rune's statement confirmed that they had talks and decided together that they should part ways, as seemingly things were not working out that well. Rune's results haven't been that great this year, even though he's been struggling to find his peak for over a year now.

It likely hasn't got anything to do with Mouratoglou, but the relationship clearly wasn't working anymore, so he chose to try something else. He's been trying a lot, so clearly, he's not really happy with how things have gone so far.

"I have had some good talks with Patrick, and we mutually decided to part ways. He will always be a great friend, but for now, the best setup for me is to continue with Kenneth who will be present at all practices and tournaments. Nothing change in my relation to Mouratoglou academy who always have been very helpful to me. I am looking forward to being healthy and back on track again"

Rune's statement on the split

Mouratoglou also released a lengthy statement confirming that the split decision was made mutually. He wished his former protege a lot of luck in the future, noting that he likely would benefit from a different approach.

"Holger and I have decided to part ways. This decision was reached mutually, as we believe Holger would benefit from a different approach in his setup right now . He is an exceptional player with immense potential and a strong character."

Mouratoglou on the split

"It has been a privilege to work with him, and I have no doubt that he will continue to achieve great success in his career. I will remain his biggest supporter. The Mouratoglou team remains fully operational and committed to help him grow. Wishing Holger all the best in his future endeavors."
