World No. 15, Jannik Sinner, has heaped praise on his ATP rival, Novak Djokovic, describing what it is that sets the Serb apart from other players.
Speaking about the pair's last eight encounter at Wimbledon this year, the young Italian revealed that he is still not entirely sure how Djokovic was able to get the better of him over five sets. Sinner has led by two sets to love before the 21-time Grand Slam champion found another gear, producing sublime tennis to earn himself yet another famous comeback.
"You have to understand what is good for you and what is not good for you. And you understand it only by playing as many matches as possible against strong players in this type of tournament," Sinner said.
"For example, what Nole did against me at Wimbledon: he was able to do something that I still don't know how to do, which I miss. Which is not just raising the level of tennis, but it's a mental thing. I was too slow to understand at that time how he played, it's that was the difference," the young Italian added.
Djokovic is currently competing in the ATP Finals in Turin and looks in scintillating form once again, having won his opening two matches without the loss of a set.
Sinner meanwhile, has opted to end his 2022 season following his loss in the opening round of the Paris Masters, primarily because of a niggling finger injury.
"I stopped after Paris because I knew I couldn't play here. I wanted to train these two weeks for the Davis Cup, but I had this pain in my finger. I had a check-up last Thursday, November 10th and I found out I couldn't play anymore," Sinner revealed.
Sinner and his team have now turned their attention to next year, in what should be an exciting prospect for the young Italian talent.
