Diana Djokovic, the mother to Novak Djokovic, believes her son has won pretty much everything there is to win in the game and that he can now retire.
Novak Djokovic's parents are, without a doubt, his strongest supporters. They have been steadfast in protecting their son against incessant and harsh criticism from the media. On the court, Djokovic has often been the pantomime villain in the hearts of many fans, largely because of the duopoly stamped by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic added an exclamation point to the GOAT debate when he won the French Open for the third time in June, surpassing his great rivals Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (22) in the total Grand Slam count - a key metric in determining the greatest tennis player of all time.
Djokovic, who turned 36 in May, is currently the world's second-ranked player on the ATP Tour. The emergence of Carlos Alcaraz halted a seemingly inexorable march to a potential Calendar Grand Slam at this year's Wimbledon. But Djokovic remains a firm favorite at any tournament he plays.
"It’s all up to him. As far as I’m concerned, he can retire right now – he has won everything."
It's not Djokovic's mother who has a desire for his son to stop playing tennis. But Djokovic's father, Srdjan, would like to see his son step away at the end of the 2024 season and called for a new star to take his place. Srdjan went as far as saying he wished his son stopped doing the 'terribly difficult job' a long time ago.
Novak Djokovic has not commented on his parents' wishes so far, but more recently, at Wimbledon, he admitted he doesn't feel more relaxed but is hungry for success and more Grand Slams. And he attributed to self-drive as critical in maintaining his current approach.
The Serbian star is expected to be in action at the Cincinnati Masters in mid-August after withdrawing from the Canadian Open due to fatigue.
