Alexander Zverev is the defending champion at the 2022 Madrid Open, and he spoke about it after starting his campaign at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
The German player started at the Manolo Santana Stadium on Wednesday when he needed three sets to beat Marin Cilic. Despite losing the opening set of the match 4-6, the German player was able to find his range and rallied to win the following two sets 6-4, 6-4.
Following the match, the second seed admitted that he was happy about his performance but thought that he lost his focus in the first set of the match, and that was why he lost it. Of course, he also gave his opponent credit for how he played.
"I thought I played very well. I just lost focus in the first set. But I am happy with the win and I am happy to be though. Marin is a difficult opponent, especially with the altitude here, so I am happy with this match."
The win continued Zverev's winning streak at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament after he lifted the trophy at the Madrid Open last year. In 2021, he defeated Matteo Berrettini in the final of the event. The match was a brutal three-setter, and the German player won 6-7(8), 6-4, and 6-3.
Having won the tournament last year is something that he remembered when playing his first match at La Caja Magica this year, and he will be hoping that the experience will help him to progress further in the Spanish capital.
"It helps to be on this court again. It is always great to have those memories in the back of your mind. But I have to have this year on my mind and I have to focus on playing well and hopefully I can do that this week."
