A couple of veterans will compete at the 2024 Mallorca Championships, as Gael Monfils will take on Dominic Thiem.
Thiem will retire from professional tennis later this year, after failing to find his best tennis again. He injured his wrist in the Spanish city a few years ago, and ever since then, he has tried his best to find his former level.
However, he never found it, and that's the reason why he'll also stop trying and stop competing on the ATP Tour. Coming back to Mallorca is a full-circle moment for him, and taking on Monfils in the first round may be a playable opponent.
The French veteran might be among the oldest players on Tour, but he still enjoys playing and has a big smile on his face, competing for every single point.
Head-to-head:
The two have played plenty of times against each other, but the Austrian generally did a lot better. Thiem won all six matches they played so far, which paints a really clear picture about the matchup, but their most recent match was played four years ago.
That's when Thiem was playing his best tennis and he hasn't been that good in a very long time. This year, Monfils played much better. Neither played particularly well this year, but generally, the French player found a higher level, and he may be able to also help himself with serve in this match.
Gael Monfils | Dominic Thiem | |

Prediction:
Neither player favors grass that much, but Monfils has generally been the better player this year. The Austrian made a decision to retire, and his focus this year will likely be at his home event, the Vienna Open, where he will play his last match.
Prediction: Gael Monfils to win in two sets.
