Frances Tiafoe will compete at the 2022 Laver Cup after John Isner was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
The 24-year-old American showed his best tennis at this year's US Open when he reached the semi-finals of the tournament and defeated second-seeded Rafael Nadal along the way.
Now, Tiafoe will have a chance to face the 22-time Grand Slam champion once again as he will play at the 2022 Laver Cup. It initially seemed that Tiafoe wouldn't make it to the Team World, as he didn't appear on the entry list.
However, John Isner withdrew from this popular exhibition event because of a wrist injury. Therefore, John McEnroe had to look for a replacement. On top of that, Nick Kyrgios announced that he would not compete at the event this year due to his family.
That meant the former ATP World No. 1 player had to look elsewhere for replacement, and he found it in his compatriot Tiafoe, who competed at the event in 2017 and 2018.
McEnroe was happy that Tiafoe could join the team. He's one of the players who enjoy the team environment, which could help the Team World in London.
"I am thrilled to have Frances on the team. He has raised his game to a whole new level and has shown that he can compete and win against the best players on Tour. Plus, he brings a positive energy that should help the entire team."
Tiafoe feels like Team World finally has a chance to beat Team Europe this year. They have never won the competition before, but the American player will want to lead his team to a win this year.
"I love Laver Cup competition. It’s an incredible event and I hope I can win points for Team World in London this time. I know what to expect and I think we have a great chance this year of taking the title from Team Europe."
