Alex de Minaur defeated Rafael Nadal in the United Cup and wearing the Australian yellow only made it better for him.
De Minaur has spent a significant portion of his life away from his place of birth, but he is extremely proud to be Australian. His favourite activity in the world is representing his nation, so he was thrilled to play Nadal while donning the recognizable yellow.
“I couldn’t be happier that I managed to get my first win over Rafa on this court (Ken Rosewall Arena)," said de Minaur. He was heavily supported by the crowd all match long. There is no secret that is my favourite court in the entire world,” added de Minaur.
The match itself was a proper battle that almost lasted for three hours but it's something de Minaur expected: “I knew it was going to be a battle. Rafa is a hell of a competitor and what he’s been able to do for this sport is truly astounding. I’m just honoured and it’s a dream come true to be able to beat him on the court. I’m very happy with that.”
He is hopeful this win pushes him forward as he called the Aussie summer the best part of the year: “I can’t wait for the Aussie summer, it’s the best time of the year. Hopefully, I can do Australia proud and play some good tennis over the coming weeks."
