Felix Auger-Aliassime hasn't had the best year so far, but the Canadian is greatly inspired by the success of Carlos Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz wasn't known very much three years ago, certainly not as well as Auger-Aliassime. In the meantime, the Spaniard was able not only to overtake him but also the entire ATP Tour, becoming world number one and a two-time Grand Slam champion.
It just shows how quickly things in tennis change, and within three years, we might have a new number one that is not Alcaraz. Even though that's a possibility, it's not a rule.
Alcaraz is certainly special, and it's why Auger-Aliassime looks up to his success, being greatly motivated to work harder and achieve what he's been able to achieve.
The Canadian hasn't had a very good year so far dealing with confidence issues and a lot of injuries, even though he hopes the North American stretch will finally see him find some form. The desire and competitive spirit are there.
"It awakens my competitive side. I also allow myself to speak for the other players [on the circuit]. We don’t want to let him win every tournament. It motivates me to do the right things."- Auger-Aliassime on Alcaraz's success
To get there, Auger-Aliassime will finally need to forget the issues he's had in the past few months. He's feeling really good about it because he feels physically okay. When he's feeling physically fine, he thinks he's one of the best players in the world.
"Things are much better. I went to Wimbledon thinking it was going to hold up, and I’d be okay. Unfortunately, I felt pain towards the middle of the match. I did what I had to do to heal myself. Right now, my knee is fine. I’m back on the field,d and I’m ready to fight with the best."
