Former British No. 1 player on the ATP Tour, Greg Rusedski, feels like there are only three players who can realistically win the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.
Rusedski is a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist who played at the grass-court major many times and knows how difficult it is to win. Speaking to Amazon Prime ahead of the Grand Slam at SW19, he noted that many players have the potential to win Wimbledon or any other Grand Slam; however, doing so actually requires several things to go right.
From talent to a bit of luck to a certain type of mentality, that's everything needed to win a Grand Slam title in 2022.
"The problem you have is, you have players who have the potential but winning is a totally different thing. Making the finals is one thing, but you have to have this mindset that's absolutely insane these days because of the big three or four we've had over the generations."
Explaining further Rusedki singled out three players he feels can realistically do it. Obviously, there is Novak Djokovic, who will be highly motivated according to Rusedski.
Then there is Rafael Nadal, who proved this year that no one can write him off, and a red-hot Matteo Berrettini, who has not peaked yet, but he's still an incredibly dominant player on the grass courts.
"Djokovic is angry because he hasn't won a slam this year and the way he went out to Rafa in the French Open will have hurt him. Rafa's trying to go for the calendar slam. He wouldn't be showing up if his foot wasn't 100 percent and he was ready to go."
"And Berrettini has been by far the best. Hurkacz is a guy who can go deep - semis or final - but win? Not with those three. Those three guys at the moment have separated themselves from the pack."
