Novak Djokovic won his third-round match against Karen Khachanov at the 2022 Paris Masters to continue his winning streak.
The 35-year-old Serbian qualified for the 2022 ATP Finals thanks to winning this year's Wimbledon, where no points were awarded. The year-end championship is reserved for the eight best players in the world. That is determined based on the ATP Race ranking.
But there is also a special rule that allows a Grand Slam champion in the given season to qualify as well. The rule was not used often in the past, but there was a great use for it this season, as Djokovic won Wimbledon but didn't receive points for his triumph, as there were no points awarded in London because of the ban on Russian and Belarusian players.
However, according to some fans and players as well, such as Cameron Norrie, it is unfair that Djokovic benefited from the third Grand Slam of the season while all other players couldn't.
Some fans voiced their opinions after Djokovic qualified for the 2022 ATP Finals some time ago, but he could prove them wrong at the last ATP Masters 1000 event of the year.
Thanks to his superb performances this year, Djokovic may still finish the ATP Race in the Top 8, and therefore, he won't need to rely on the special rule that granted him the entry previously.
Since Hubert Hurkacz and Taylor Fritz both lost at the 2022 Paris Masters already, the 21-time Grand Slam champion is now only one match away from surpassing them in the rankings and proving that he really deserves to participate in the 2022 ATP Finals.
In the third round of the last ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season, Djokovic took on Karen Khachanov, who he beat already three times this year.
He continued his dominance against the Russian player also in the French capital by winning 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 27 minutes. In the quarter-finals, he will take on Lorenzo Musetti, who took out the third-seeded Casper Ruud.
