De Minaur Forced To Withdraw From Cincinnati Open Because Of 'Unique' Injury

Alex de Minaur suffered an injury at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, which has kept him out of action for a while and will keep him out of action in the coming weeks as well.

De Minaur was playing amazing tennis at Wimbledon when he injured himself against Arthur Fils. The Australian was only one point away from finishing that match when he suffered the injury, so it was a very bizarre sequence, as he won the match point and limped out to his bench.

Now, it is turning out to be even worse for him. Not only did it end his good run at Wimbledon, but it also kept him away from competing on the ATP Tour for a prolonged period of time.

When he was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon, de Minaur admitted that he was devastated by the injury. He further admitted that playing on it was not good because there was a chance of making it worse, so he withdrew.

Despite that, de Minaur traveled to Paris for the Olympic Games. He even played some tennis at the Olympics, but only in doubles, as he withdrew from the singles.

It only happened because it was the Olympics, and there was no chance that he would have played at any other event. He probably shouldn't have ever played the doubles because it's clear the injury still bothers him.

He first withdrew from the Canadian Open because of it and now withdrew from the Cincinnati Open, as well.

"Yeah, I’m devastated, but I had to pull out due to a hip injury, a little tear of the fibre cartilage that kind of is at the end or connects to the adductor. I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against Fils and got a scan, and it confirms that this was the injury and with, yeah, high risk of making it worse if I was to step on court, so yeah."

The problem with this injury is that it's understudied, so doctors can't tell him much other than that it's not good enough for playing tennis. There is no timetable for his return as of now, either.

"This is a completely unique, new injury that they’ve got very little research on. It’s four years worth of research. Therefore, that’s why they couldn’t give me an approximate on recovery time."

"It’s more just a little bit of hope, wait and see. So, yeah, it’s quite a unique injury. I’m hoping the pain goes down with a bit of rest, and then ultimately it’s kind of working against the clock to get back as soon as possible."

There is not much de Minaur can do, but try to heal as quickly as possible. It's entirely out of his control as the US Open quickly approaches. Hopefully, he will be there, but the way this unfolded and the way he's spoken about it don't seem promising.
