Wimbledon breakout star Christopher Eubanks won't begin his 2024 campaign at the Hong Kong Open, as he withdrew from the ATP 250 event.
This year has been the best professional year Christopher Eubanks ever had. He's a player who mostly played in the United States and was slowly transitioning into the analyst sphere by working for the Tennis Channel recently.
While he excelled at that role, Eubanks gave tennis one more shot this year, and it proved to be the best possible choice he could make. He had some great early results in the year, which improved his ranking enough so that he could travel to Europe and play a bit there.
The best result came at Wimbledon, where he bested multiple great players in a run to the second week. It earned him the breakout player of the event award and his ranking further improved.
That allowed him to earn more money and basically play until the end of the year. He saved his career and was supposed to begin this 2024 campaign in Hong Kong.
It's an ATP 250 event that was added to the calendar this year as part of the Australian Open warm-up. Unfortunately, Eubanks won't play at the event because he withdrew a few days before the start.
At the moment, there's no indication as to why he pulled out because nothing from him or his camp came out, but it certainly puts some doubt on the Australian Open.
If Eubanks is, in fact, injured and can't play now, there isn't a very good chance that he'll be able to play in basically two weeks when the Australian Open rolls around.
Missing that early Grand Slam would be pretty devastating for Eubanks whose serve could certainly do a lot of damage Down Under. He's just a great character to have at events, so he would be missed in that capacity as well.
