Carlos Alcaraz won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. He was given the award as recognition for his 2022 season, which saw him become the ATP World No. 1 player and win his first major.
Alcaraz won the Madrid Open title on Sunday, and on Monday, he enjoyed the Laureus Awards ceremony in Paris. In the French capital, the Spaniard collected the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award for his 2022 season, which saw him reach seven finals and win five of them.
"A very special night in Paris! Thank you for this Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award! Thank you to the academy and everyone who made this possible. And of course congratulations to all the winners and nominees!"
He started the year by winning his maiden ATP 500 trophy at the Rio Open. Then, Alcaraz won his first ATP Masters 1000 trophy at the Miami Open.
He then followed that up with back-to-back title wins in Barcelona and Madrid. His tremendous campaign continued over the summer as Alcaraz made two more finals in Hamburg and Umag but lost both of those.
The Spaniard's biggest trophy of the year came at the US Open, where he used Novak Djokovic's absence to outplay the field and win his maiden Grand Slam trophy. By winning that, Alcaraz became the youngest ATP World No. 1 player ever, beating out all members of the Big Three to the achievement.
He didn’t win any trophies until the end of the year but finished the year as World No. 1 as well. All of that was ultimately more than enough for the Spaniard to be awarded the 2023 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.
This year, the young Spaniard has started really well, too, with two trophies (Indian Wells, Barcelona) to his name.
