Carlos Alcaraz has added another accolade to his impressive list of achievements, securing the 2023 Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award.
The Spaniard's meteoric rise to fame began in 2022, when he won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open and became the youngest world No. 1 in ATP Rankings history. His extraordinary talent and relentless determination have captivated tennis fans, heralding the arrival of a new superstar in the sport.
Only recently, he added many more titles to his impressive resume as he's been the dominant player in 2023 again. Currently, he's on an 11-match winning streak after lifting the trophy at the 2023 Madrid Open.
But the award comes thanks to his last year's accomplishments. At just 19 years, 4 months, and 6 days old, he shattered records by becoming the youngest ever men's world No. 1, as well as the first teenager in the Open Era to top the men's rankings.
But his groundbreaking achievements did not stop there. A day after his 19th birthday, at the Madrid Open, Alcaraz faced two of tennis's most iconic players, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, on consecutive days. In a stunning display, he became the first player to defeat them back-to-back on clay.
The Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award celebrates the most remarkable rising stars in the world of sports. Alcaraz faced stiff competition from fellow nominees, including tennis player Elena Rybakina, Morocco men's football team, figure skater Nathan Chen, golfer Scottie Scheffler, and runner Tobi Amusan.
Ultimately, the 20-year-old's unwavering dedication to his craft set him apart from the rest, as he was picked as the winner of the award in 2023 and apparently, he enjoyed it.
"A very special night in Paris! Thank you for this Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award! Thank you to the academy and everyone who made this possible. And of course congratulations to all the winners and nominees!"
