A pretty interesting matchup awaits us at the 2024 Indian Wells Open as Carlos Alcaraz will take on Alexander Zverev.
Prior to the season's first ATP Masters 1000 event, Alcaraz had some issues with his ankle, so nobody really knew how he would perform in Indian Wells. He did really well and cruised to the quarter-final.
Zverev, on the other hand, played below his level in Mexico with a couple of bad losses but found some good level in California, and he's in the quarter-final as well.
The comeback win over Alex de Minaur was particularly impressive, considering how well the Australian has played this year.
Head-to-head:
These two have played some very interesting matches in the past. One of them was their most recent match in Australia, in which Zverev ended up winning.
Surprisingly, the German outplayed Alcaraz a lot in that meeting and won in four sets, so it will be interesting if the Spaniard finds something new.
More generally, Zverev also leads the H2H 5-3, so he's not been the best matchup for the Spaniard. However, I do think that Indian Wells' unique nature certainly benefits Alcaraz a bit more, but we'll see if he actually wins the match.
Alexander Zverev | Carlos Alcaraz | |
5 | H2H | 3 |
6 | Rank | 2 |
26 | Age | 20 |
14-4 | 2024 W/L | 9-3 |
408-181 | Career W/L | 164-46 |
Prediction:
The win condition for Alcaraz is rather simple in this match. He must outplay Zverev from the baseline which isn't easily done, especially not in these conditions.
The German's serve will be crucial for him in keeping Alcaraz from taking too many chances, but the higher bounce will make it easier for the Spaniard to return.
Overall, I do think that Alcaraz benefits more from the conditions, and his comfort level here has been tremendous in the past. I do think that will be enough for him to win the match.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in two sets.
