The intergenerational matchup tennis fans have been wishing for could become a reality after Carlos Alcaraz signed up to play the 2022 Swiss Indoors in Basel.
Alcaraz is set to make his debut appearance at the ATP 500 event, joining Swiss legend Roger Federer at his home tournament. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has committed to playing at one of his happy hunting grounds in late October as the first entrant.
Federer's admiration of Alcaraz is known. The former World No. 1's absence from the Tour because of injuries has coincided with the explosive arrival of the young Spaniard as a fully-fledged top player.
The 19-year-old has won four ATP titles in the first half of the season, including two Masters in Miami and Madrid. He has already beaten Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who are both longtime rivals of Federer.
Alcaraz has fast-tracked his rise into the world's Top 10, and the general consensus is that if he continues at this pace, he will soon become the World No. 1 and a future Grand Slam winner. In fact, that's how countryman Nadal sees it after recognizing his potential.
Basel is quite a famous destination for ATP players. It's Roger Federer's home event, and he never misses it. He is the most successful player in the tournamnet's history, winning the title a record ten times.
2022 will be no different, as Federer will play there potentially one last time provided he can overcome any niggling injuries. The 40-year-old will miss Wimbledon for the first time in his career and hasn't played this year.
Journalist Simon Haring announced on social media that Carlos Alcaraz had confirmed his participation in the event later this year. The event will run from October 22nd to 30th, and it will be the Spaniard's first time playing in Basel.
"The Swiss Indoors Basel (22-30 October) just announced, that Carlos Alcaraz will play the Tournament for the first time. Roger Federer scheduled to play his home tournament as well."
