Ben Shelton vs Lorenzo Musetti: 2024 Miami Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Ben Shelton has looked really good so far at the 2024 Miami Open, but what happens when he faces Lorenzo Musetti?

The American has demonstrated a really solid level in Miami so far. Much of that has to do with his serve being an absolute nightmare to counter on these types of courses. It's quick and low-bouncing, so it's really hard to dig out.

He also grew up in Florida, so this is a really special event where he wants to do well. Musetti has also done well, though he likely preferred the slower variant from a few years ago.

He's growing more comfortable on hard courts, but he's far from an excellent player on them. Still, he's one of the better players in the world, so opponents have to take him seriously.

Head-to-head:

I don't think Shelton will take Musetti for granted because the Italian can beat him if he gives him a chance. He doesn't have the raw power that the American does have, but he has some tricky angles in his arsenal, even with his serve.

After all, all suggests that Shelton would be a better fit on grass, and he still lost to Musetti last year in Queen's Club.

That loss will certainly be on his mind, and I think he'll approach this the right way. That, combined with his serve and raw power, should be enough to win him the match.

Prediction:

Shelton has looked really solid in recent weeks, but he's thrown away a few matches as well. The loss against Casper Ruud in Mexico comes to mind as it's a match he should have won but didn't, so there is danger looming in a matchup like this.

Prediction: Ben Shelton to win in two sets.
