'At Their Best Alcaraz Wins': Navratilova Shares Insight Into Alcaraz-Sinner Rivalry

by Nurein Ahmed

With two and a half months of the 2024 season gone, we have an early contender for the biggest match of the year, which will take place in Indian Wells.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are no strangers to embryonic fame and superstar status. Both are still in their early 20s and ranked in the world's Top three.

They have each tasted Grand Slam success and are leading lights of the new generation. Recently, Martina Navratilova expounded on the special qualities that each player possesses and who is better of the two.

"50-50. I mean, I think Alcaraz at his best is better than anybody at their best including Sinner and Djokovic. His weapons are a little bigger. But Sinner is a little more solid and are little less risky."

Navratilova speaking on Tennis Channel

The American tennis icon was speaking on the Tennis Channel newsdesk, where she also predicted who would win their anticipated semifinal showdown on Saturday in California.

"Maybe Sinner wins three out of five right now, but at their best, Alcaraz wins. Do you see the size of Alcaraz's hands? He's got massive hands that allow him to do that little flick, that ridiculous shot, that half volley, or the one passing shot."

"The ball is this high, and he can still flick it. It's his hands that allow him to accelerate so well. That forehand is a weapon of mass destruction."

Sinner leads the head-to-head in tour-level matches 4-3, beating Alcaraz in their most recent clash in Beijing. But Alcaraz is the reigning Indian Wells champion and defeated Sinner at this tournament 12 months ago.

It promises to be a fascinating match as Sinner puts his 16-match undefeated streak on the line, whereas the Spaniard looks to end his title drought, which has now entered its eighth month.
