Andy Murray is no stranger to sports science or to embracing the medical side of tennis, and doctor Eva Carneiro has praised the Brit for his openness to improving his health.
Former Chelsea Football Club doctor Carneiro has played a significant role in Andy Murray's recent success by recommending collagen-based supplements to improve the three-time Grand Slam winner's strength.
The supplements reportedly provide additional power and spring to support athletes' movements. Following hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019, Murray has been able to keep playing on the ATP Tour.
The 35-year-old was on the brink of retiring ahead of the 2019 Australian Open but u-turned and underwent a second hip surgery later in that season.
It appears as though the second surgery rejuvenated Murray, who has since won the 2019 European Open and reached the Sydney Tennis Classic Open final earlier in 2022.
Moreover, Gibraltar-born doctor Carneiro told the Telegraph that she believes the former British number one's acceptance of science and health information has lengthened his career.
"[Murray is] Fantastically knowledgeable. The kind of athlete who is always looking to examine the science and trying to work out how it can help him."
"As medical professionals, we are discovering that what we thought was impossible is no longer the case. Athletes like Andy and Rafael Nadal are breaking boundaries on all fronts."
"These are unique, very intelligent, educated people, who are prepared to take and examine medical evidence and advice and push through perceived challenges."
Carneiro was a well-known member of Jose Mourinho's backroom staff at Premier League team Chelsea between 2009 and 2015. However, following a falling out with Mourinho, Carneiro left the club and has since operated her private clinic in London.
Murray appears to be one client benefiting from Carneiro's input. He has enjoyed an injury-free 2022 campaign so far and is now preparing for a last-16 Madrid Open clash against Novak Djokovic.
Despite the health positives, Carneiro explained that a balanced and considered approach for all athletes is key when using supplements.
"We also have to be careful with them, to be ethical and be prepared to discuss their futures and quality of life with their families. We want them to enjoy life after retirement, not to be suffering because of their choices today."
"But they have assembled teams of quality experts whom they trust. They are very good at assessing the risks, making the decisions together, and then having the mental strength to push forward and do what they need to do."
