'Alone In The Bedroom A Few Tears Fell': Sinner On Emotions After Losing Grandfather

Jannik Sinner revealed that the upsetting news he received about his grandfather's passing made him cry.

Ahead of the ATP Finals in Turin, where Sinner will play the first match of the tournament against Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday afternoon, the 22-year-old sat down for an interview with Italian publication Corriere della Sera and shared a melancholic story that drove him to shed tears.

Sinner tends to keep a very low profile on social media and shies away from displaying flashy images about himself or his family members. In the past, he admitted that he would always keep his dating life private and has never posted a picture in the company of his parents.

But during a recent interview, Jannik Sinner opened up about the loss of his grandfather, Josef Sinner, who passed on in January, after the 22-year-old finished competing at the Australian Open. He was 91 when he died, and young Sinner received the devastating news a day after exiting the tournament following a five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

"When my grandfather (Josef Sinner) passed away in January, I was on a flight back from Australia. I landed in Milan at 6, my grandfather had died at 4."

"I found my father at the airport. He was silent but I immediately saw that something was wrong. He told me on the street, and I held back. Not even my parents knew this: then, alone in the bedroom, a few tears fell. It’s normal."

Sinner is on home territory this weekend, starting his campaign against Tsitsipas at the ATP Finals. He will aim to become the first Italian man to win the year-end title. After a year that began with pensive sadness, Sinner can finish it off with smiles and celebration.

After a career-best season, Sinner is likely to attain a Top 4 finish in the ATP rankings for the first time since turning professional. Having won four titles this season, including the ATP 500 on indoor hard courts in Vienna, he is among the players with a strong chance to win the ATP Finals.
