Alexander Zverev vs Nicolas Jarry: 2024 Italian Open Rome - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Alexander Zverev will try to win his biggest trophy of the 2024 season at the Italian Open in Rome against Nicolas Jarry, whom nobody expected to see in the final.

Even though not many expected to see the Chilean in the Italian Open final, that doesn't mean he didn't earn his place or lack the level to be in the final. He has been playing really solid tennis all week long, with the win over Stefanos Tsitsipas being quite a significant one for him.

It's the product of months of hard work, and it's not like we haven't seen him play at an incredible level before. He bested Carlos Alcaraz earlier this year in Argentina on clay, which shows just how good he can be.

Zverev denied the fans in Rome an all-Chilean final by beating Alejandro Tabilo in the other semi-final. Although losing the first set 1-6 wasn't great, he rallied spectacularly to win the match.

Now, he'll have a chance to win another big trophy, but we'll see whether he can muster up the necessary level and overcome his minor injury.

Head-to-head:

Zverev and Jarry played a few times, with three recent matches. The German leads the H2H 4-2 overall, but the three most recent meetings show 2-1 for him. He won the most recent match in Beijing last year in three sets, but the Chilean won the only clay match in Geneva last year.

It's an interesting matchup between players of similar height and strengths. Jarry can do a lot of damage with his serve and forehand, and he'll likely be the player who 'goes for it' more often. Zverev will need to be really precise with his serve; otherwise, he might run into problems.

Alexander Zverev Nicolas Jarry
4 H2H 2
5 Rank 24
27 Age 28
27-9 2024 W/L 16-11
421-168 Career W/L 111-98

Prediction:

I'm going to side with Zverev in this match simply because of his experience of playing such finals, compared to Jarry, for whom it would be the biggest title of his tennis career.

Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in three sets.
